First things first, traffic getting into the city lately has been horrendous, but for some reason, traffic leaving the city, not so much. They are currently re-doing Constitution Avenue (for those not familiar with D.C., this is the same road the Washington Monument and the White House sit on) which means every day there are lane closures. Why they have chosen to do construction during work hours I have no idea considering everywhere else seems to leave road construction to the nighttime. They are doing lots of digging so I am assuming that whatever they are doing must be done during the daylight hours. I’m not 100% sure, but this morning, when we arrived into the city, my friend and I looked over to see this gentlemen reading the paper. Unfortunately, he put it down before I could snap a picture, but it was nice to see he was working so hard. By the looks of it, I’ll be suffering through the 10 blocks of bumper to bumper traffic for quite some time.
Learned something new this week—if you keep strawberries in an airtight container they will last longer. Perhaps this is old news to some of you, but I was quite happy that after trying it out, it worked! Wegman’s (my favorite grocery store) has had their 2lb container of strawberries on sale quite a bit this summer. I love a good deal so I usually buy them. The only problem-- my breakfast includes just a mere ¼ cup of berries, which isn’t all that much, so it takes me awhile to make it through 2lbs. In the past, I’ve simply eaten as much as I could before they go bad, which is usually just a couple of days, and end up losing a good portion of my strawberries. Last week, the sale was on again so I picked up another 2lb container. I was determined to make them last so I googled how to keep strawberries fresh longer. The trick is to limit the moisture (if you can, wash before you eat instead of washing all at one time which is typically what I do to save time) and put them in a container with plenty of space. I used two large Pyrex bowls with lids (the site said Tupperware wouldn’t work, but it might be worth a shot). A week later, my strawberries are going strong with no signs of going bad anytime soon.
Ziploc’s Zip ‘n Steam bags are fan-freaking-tastic!!! I pack all of my food for the day in a cooler and bring it to work with me. These steam bags make that process so much easier. This morning, while eating my breakfast, I was able to steam my broccoli for the day and it took a whopping 3 minutes! Not that I mind pre-making my food, but if I don’t make all of my meals for the week on Sunday, I generally find that I’m running out of time during the week. These bags are my life-saver. I had just enough time before the gym last night to cook up my protein for the next couple of days, but knew I wouldn’t have the extra time to cook my veggies in the steamer. Ziploc came to my rescue and I love them for it! (And no, I’m not receiving compensation of any kind for this endorsement—just a happy customer promoting a good product.) I love when companies make products that make my life easier, don’t you?
mmm love me some steamed broccoli!!!
I splurged and decided to buy a few items for myself this week. I’ve been trying to be good because I’m taking a {rather large}pay cut with the new job (which I start in like 2 weeks!!!!!) and I need to get in the habit of NOT spending money. Of course, on my way to another store, I passed by H&M and did not have the willpower to stay out. I found a super cute dress to wear to my cousin’s wedding in October (which I justified buying because I can wear it to work too) and a cute pair of jean shorts. I have to admit that I’m not really a fan of shorts—probably has something to do with my short legs—but this pair was cute and I actually liked them so I figured that was a good sign to buy them:) Then yesterday, I caved and bought a new bathing suit. I had been eyeing this suit ever since Tara posted her pictures from the beach. I need to do some serious clean-up of my beachwear and I thought I would add this one, while I throw out about 10 others. Now, let's just hope I like it!
And last but not least, I’m finally starting to get some definition in the muscles in my back and shoulders. Obviously, I can’t see my back when working out, but I know that I train hard and that I should have made some progress by now. Well, thankfully, I was right. I took some updated pictures for my trainer on Monday night and decided to include a picture of my back. I was pretty happy after uploading the pictures because I can see that training hard has paid off. The only thing that would have made this just a bit better would be more defined triceps… but I’m working on it.
So what are all you lovelies up to this week?
