1. Be realistic with your goals. You're not going to lose 10-20 pounds in one week and to be perfectly honest, it's not really healthy to. There is no such thing as one size fits all when it comes to fitness so just because Suzy on The Biggest Loser lost 12 pounds in one week, doesn't mean you will and you need to go in with that attitude. If you set your sights too high, you'll find yourself having a hard time sticking with it. Setting attainable goals will keep you motivated.
2. Diet pills don't work. Just like there isn't one size fits all, there is no quick fix. If it promises weight loss while you eat whatever you want and dont have to exercise, it's a lie! I mean, really? Every book you've ever read says that diet and exercise matter, but this one little pill box says they don't and you believe it? Don't bother- I can think of a lot of things you should spend your money on instead:)
3. Get on a plan. I know a ton of people who the moment they start talking about getting in shape, they say that the lack of knowledge on what to do is what holds them back. I'm here to tell you that's no excuse. The internet is full of information and there are plenty of plans out there for free. Interested in finding one that works? Try bodybuilding.com. I know what you're thinking and stop!! Bodybuilding.com isn't about big manly muscles- it's about getting healthy and staying healthy. It's full of articles, has an exercise database, workout plans (including diet plans), and tons of products.
4. Pay attention to your diet. Exercise is important, but you can't exercise away a bad diet. I always chuckle when someone sucks down some pizza and a few beers and then says they have to run a few extra miles to burn it off. Yeah, that doesn't work. Sure, you may burn some extra calories, but your body still processed that food for what it was. Not all calories are created equal. I think you'll agree when you start eating a diet in which the bulk of your calories come from lean proteins and vegetables versus mostly carbohydrates. And definitely dont forget water- you have got to drink lots of water!!
5. Hire a trainer or find a gym partner. Accountability is paramount, especially when you're just beginning. If a trainer or partner is out of the question, at least keep a journal. I have hired several trainers, but I also really enjoy working out alone so I keep a log. While I like having my husband around to spot me, we typically walk into the gym and immediately part ways:) You might also want to look into what your gym offers- mine has traditional personal training, but they also offer small group training and a variety of classes. Sometimes a gym can provide you all the accountability you need. Do what works for you!
6. Take responsibility for your actions. You can't blame anyone but yourself for the progress you've made or the lack thereof. While external factors can sometimes get in the way of your goals, don't let it get the best of you. If you fall off the bandwagon, acknowledge it for what it is, but refuse to let it set you back. No one is perfect.
7. Stay positive. There is no room for Negative Nancy! You aren't going to see any drastic changes in the first few weeks, but you're still making progress and others will likely notice the changes in your body long before you do. I always like to take progress pictures-- not to show people, but rather for myself because that's the only way I can really see the changes and those changes are what motivate me.
8. Kick all those bad habits. I'm not trying to stand up on my soapbox and preach, but if you stop smoking and/or drinking, you'll be taking a huge step forward. That's not to say that going out with friends and having a glass of wine now and then is bad, just remember that it's better in moderation.
9. Sleep. You should aim to get at least 7-8 hours of sleep each night. I know that's not always possible, but your body uses that time to recover and you will need those hours if you're working out like you should. That whole beauty sleep thing is no joke!!
And last but definitely not least...
10. Live life!! Enjoy your family and friends and don't deprive yourself of that. Stress will hinder your success so get out there and have fun.

This is great advice! I need to print it out and tape it to my bathroom mirror! (Am I the only person who does that?! haha!)
